Granit Xhaka has admitted to crying "tears of joy" after leaving Arsenal for Bayer Leverkusen earlier this year.

A former Arsenal player has now revealed that he "cried tears of joy" when he left the club in July.

With Granit Xhaka having moved to Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen earlier this year, he has now admitted that he was really happy to make the return to Germany.

Since making the £21 million (R476 million) move to Die Werkself, the 31-year-old has fit seamlessly into Xabi Alonso's side that is currently top of the German league, two points ahead of Bayern Munich, after going 10 games unbeaten, with Xhaka appearing in all of those fixtures.

The man who finished last season with seven goals and seven assists in the Premier League under Mikel Arteta has now revealed that he was moved to tears when his transfer from the Gunners was confirmed.

"Absolutely. I'm a very emotional person, I like to cry and I'm not ashamed of it," Xhaka, who played for Borussia Monchengladbach before joining the London club, told Leverkusen's official website.

"Of course, I also cried for joy at times. For example, when I made my transfer here to Leverkusen. I also cried tears of joy because I really wanted to go back. I think it's also part of it as a person."

The Switzerland international spent seven years with the Gunners, making 297 appearances and scoring 23 times while assisting a further 29 strikes.

He proved an integral member of the side that challenged Manchester City for the EPL title last season, with Arteta's men ultimately falling short during the latter stages of the campaign.
