Ex-Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel is reportedly interested in taking over a surprise national team job following his brutal sacking in September.

The former Blues boss was relieved of his duties at Stamford Bridge just seven matches into the new season following an underwhelming start to the 2022/23 campaign.

Prior to his dismissal, he enjoyed a fair bit of success with the London outfit, leading them to six finals during his 18-month tenure, and winning the UEFA Champions League, the FIFA Club World Cup, and the UEFA Super Cup titles in the process.

His sacking came as a surprise to many as Chelsea had backed him enormously in the latest transfer window, spending more than €200 million (R3.5 billion) on new players.

At the beginning of October, it was reported that Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen had made an approach for the tactician but their attempts were rebuffed by the ex-Borussia Dortmund mentor.

German newspaper Bild has now claimed that Tuchel is interested in managing the England national team if the job becomes available in the near future.

Current Three Lions head coach Gareth Southgate is under increasing pressure after his side were relegated from their UEFA Nations League group after a six-game winless run in the competition in 2022.

Some have accused the Englishman of being unable to get the best out of the plethora of talent he has at his disposal ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and in June, Southgate insisted he would not overstay his welcome at the helm if things are not going well, although his contract runs until December 2024.

"I won’t outstay my welcome but I think I can do a good job for the team, and I think we've done a good job for the team," he said at the time, per Eurosport.

"I think we'll continue to improve the team, which we have done over a consistent period of time, and we're also developing young players that will leave England in a good place for a long period to come."
