Chelsea booked their spot in the Carabao Cup semi-finals after overcoming Newcastle United on penalties at Stamford Bridge.

One change from the Blues saw Enzo Fernandez replaced Mykhailo Mudryk on the back of their 2-0 win over Sheffield United on Saturday.

Conor Gallagher almost gave the host the perfect start after picking up the second-ball from a rash clearance on the edge of the area, but he curled off the upright.

Newcastle were ahead as poor footwork in the 15th minutes by Benoit Badiashile allowed Callum Wilson to regain possession to use the outside of his boot to find the net.

Raheem Sterling came extremely close to bring the host level with a smartly taken shot in the area, but he was met by Bruno Guimaraes’ block.

Chelsea needed to shake up the playing contingent, as Fernandez struggled to carry on due to a knock and allowed Armand Broja to take his spot beyond the half-hour mark.

The host were all-out on the attack in the second half in desperate search of the equaliser, as Martin Dubravka’s outstretched arm after getting down kept out Sterling’s first-time shot.

Maurizio Pochettino’s side continued to come from all angles in a quest to draw level, but found the Magpies pinned in their own half and behind the ball too.

Christopher Nkunku was hauled off the bench with the crowd applauding inside the final 20 minutes and replaced Nicolas Jackson for his competitive debut for the Blues.

Substitute Mudryk displayed sharp instincts at the death when he capitalised on Kieran Trippier’s error to lash in the bottom-corner and send the match to a penalty shoot-out.

Trippier then missed one of their five spot-kicks, with Chelsea goalkeeper Dodre Petrovic saving the other off Matthew Ritchie to send the Blues to the final four.
