Michael Nsien, the head coach of the USA men's U19 team, has revealed he rejected an offer from the Nigeria national team.

A certain coach has revealed that he recently rejected a job with one of the medal-winning teams at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, with the offer being cited as "insulting".

Following the most recent AFCON, there has been a long list of managerial ins and outs on the continent, with at least nine coaches becoming jobless during the tournament.

Runners-up Nigeria would also part ways with their head coach Jose Peseiro in March, despite the tactician guiding the African giants to their first AFCON final since winning the showpiece in 2013.

This was followed by widespread reports that the Portuguese mentor could be persuaded to extend his stay by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), but Peseiro had already made up his mind on continuing elsewhere.

The Super Eagles have since named national team legend Finidi George as their permanent head coach after he led the team on a caretaker basis during the March international break.

Another manager who is said to have applied for the role is the United States U19 men's coach Michael Nsien, and the Nigerian-American has now revealed that he was offered a chance to be an assistant coach to George after his appointment, but he turned the NFF down due to contractual disagreements.

"Yes, they (NFF) approached me. They cannot meet my salary requirements," Nsien told Punch.

With the NFF having proposed to pay Nsien on a per-match basis, a close member of his camp is said to have described the offer as "insulting".

"He is not unemployed; he still has two years on his current contract. So, it's insulting to think he can accept to be paid per match. That [the NFF offer] is amateur. Now they're unsure of what to do," the unnamed source said.

An NFF official, whose name was withheld, told the same publication: "We didn't even get that far as per the contract talks.

"They asked him for an amount per game and he said if it's not a full contract no need to discuss more, that the NFF has to match or better his current contract with the US team."

Nsien, who was born in Oklahoma to Nigerian parents, has no prior experience of senior men's international coaching, with his coaching experience to date only including stints in the American second tier and with the US U16 side prior to his job with the same nation's U19 team.
