Victor Gomes has been tasked with officiating another top ranked nation at the World Cup following confirmation of his second appointment.

Gomes got his World Cup campaign underway when he ran the rules as world champions France overpowered Australia in Group D.

FIFA has shown confidence in him by making him the first referee from the continent to blow the whistle in his second group game in Qatar in the Group E match between Japan and Spain on Thursday.

Of the referees from CAF, Janny Sikazwe, Bakary Papa Gassama, and Mustapha Ghorbal have whistled one game each so far while Salima Mukansanga has only been a fourth official to date.

Controversial Senegalese referee Maguette Ndiaye is also yet to be in the middle but has had four games as the fourth official and gets his fifth today when Australia meets Denmark.

So, from blowing the whistle in fourth ranked France’s game, Gomes will now take care of business for 2010 champions and seventh-ranked Spain at the Khalifa International Stadium.

In taking charge of the whistle on Tuesday, Gomes will again be assisted by fellow countryman Zakhele Siwela as the first assistant with Souru Phatsoane of Lesotho as the second assistant.

Female official Mukansanga will be the fourth official.

Gomes is making his World Cup debut and already has a tournament basic salary of USD 70 000 (approx. R1,2 million) paid to every referee at the tournament.

Then for every match in the group stages, referees will get USD 3000 (approx. R52 000) which will increase to USD10 000 (approx. R173 000) in the knockout stages.

This is added to their contracted pay as FIFA referees.

Gomes already has USD 76 000 (approx. R1,3 million) from his competition salary plus two matches which could increase with a group stages appointment.
