The worth of Mamelodi Sundowns’ African Football League two-legged contest against Al Ahly will carry prize money that dwarfs all of what is still available to play for on the domestic scene and leave The Brazilians with the possibility of near ‘millionaire’ rewards.

Sundowns have travelled to Cairo, Egypt for the second leg of the AFL semi-finals carrying a slender 1-0 lead from Sunday’s first leg.

The Brazilians will go through at the Cairo International Stadium (20h00) even if they suffer defeat as long as they score, and the losing margin is not wider than one goal.

Wednesday’s match will have USD1,7 million (approx. R32 million) for the losers, while the winners will move to play for the winners’ prize of USD4 million (approx. R76 million), while the runners-up will earn USD3 million (approx. R57 million).

With at least R32 million already in the pocket after 10 days, it leaves Sundowns with a purse richer than all that remains to play for on the local scene.

Domestic competitions offer R15 million for winning the DStv Premiership, R7 million for lifting the Nedbank Cup, R6,85 million for taking the Carling Cup, and the R8 million which Orlando Pirates got for the MTN8.

This leaves the total for winning all remaining competitions (League, Carling, and Nedbank) on the domestic scene at R28,85 million which is R3,5 million less than Sundowns are already guaranteed in the AFL.

Sundowns still have further huge prize to play for in the CAF Champions League where the winners also get USD4 million (approx. R76,3 million).

Downs are already in the group stages where they will play Pyramids, TP Mazembe, and FC Nouadhibou and already guaranteed of USD700 000 (approx. R13,26 million) with a quarterfinal place carrying USD900 000 (approx. R17 million) in rewards.

As it stands, Sundowns have already secured R45 million from the AFL and Champions League.

This means each player at Sundowns stands to earn healthy bonuses that could stretch to a million each, depending on how far the club goes in both competitions.
