Itumeleng Khune is still not out of the woods at Kaizer Chiefs despite his return from suspension.

The legendary status that Itumeleng Khune earned throughout his time at Kaizer Chiefs will be bruised by what is developing into a wretched ending.

Khune has not been back in the matchday squad seven weeks since his return from a club-imposed suspension that came after he transgressed on club protocols.

The suspension meant the veteran keeper lost both his place in the team and armband following an alcohol-related incident that happened in November.

As he moves to within weeks of his 37th birthday, Khune is facing nervous moments.

While Chiefs did indicate that this will be Khune’s last playing contract at the club, the former Bafana Bafana keeper indicated his desire to continue playing.

It is evident that game-time minutes will not happen at Chiefs beyond the end of this season.

Amakhosi have already given new deals to Bruce Bvuma and Brandon Petersen, while Karabo Molefe is pushing to get his turn.

Beyond that, Chiefs are being constantly thrown further options with Salim Magoola of Richards Bay FC constantly mentioned.

Chiefs have also been linked with Chippa United’s Nigerian goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

It looks gloomy for Khune at this stage with the club stressed by their poor form that has left them in the bottom half.

From carrying Chiefs on his shoulders for a dozen years since he got his first team break in 2007, Khune’s matchday contribution has dropped immensely.

Khune has played only a quarter of Chiefs’ games in the period since January 2020.
