Former Orlando Pirates winger Bennet Chenene says the poor quality of football that is dished out week in and week out has made him stop watching the Premier Soccer League.

Before hanging up his boots, Chenene played for the likes of Pirates, AmaZulu FC, Bloemfontein Celtic and SuperSport United, amongst others.

The 40-year-old says the way the PSL standard has dropped, he could be easily earning R300 000 a month if he was still playing.

"I no longer watch football, these people are playing rubbish," Chenene tells KickOff.

"The current players no longer have passion for the game. They play well this week and next week they are nowhere to be seen. They lack consistency. The only team that is trying to compete is Orlando Pirates, they are much better compared to the other 14 teams. For obvious reasons, we cannot count (Mamelodi) Sundowns.

"We do assist young players at the grassroots level and try to recommend them somewhere, but the clubs always reject them. We trying to help, but the football politics of South African football always disappoint us.

"These clubs, they'd rather listen to a scout that never played football, just because they know him. That's what is killing our football," he adds.

The current crop of players did not escape his scathing criticism either...

"Let’s be honest with ourselves, there are no more quality players, it's finished. These days, people are only playing for money. Football is business nowadays. The other teams should learn from Sundowns, they must buy and develop players as Sundowns do.

"I'm pretty sure if I was still playing today, I'd be worth not less than R300 000. These days, Sundowns are guaranteed a win in every game they play. Nowadays, even a toddler can tell you who is going to win the (league in the) 2024/25 PSL season," says an unimpressed Chenene.

The former speedy winger says there are no questions, in his opinion, regarding which generation comes out tops when it comes to producing a better quality of football, between then and now.

"In our time, no one could predict which team was going to win the league. Sundowns are winning the league by five points and 10 points. It's unacceptable. So, our generation was way better than this one, to be honest. Sundowns are not winning because of the money they have, money can't make you a good footballer.

"Most of these players were playing well in their former teams, but immediately they join the big teams they freeze.

"Immediately they arrive in Jozi, they are blinded by the Jo'burg lights."
