With the South African rugby team having been crowned world champions, African football icon Didier Drogba was there to witness the Springboks lift a second successive Webb Ellis trophy, while he had a message for captain Siya Kolisi.

The story

South Africa made history this past weekend after they beat New Zealand in the 2023 Rugby World Cup to claim an unprecedented fourth title (1995, 2007, 2019, and 2023).

Captain Kolisi also etched his name in history by becoming the first South African skipper to win back-to-back World Cups, a feat only previously achieved by New Zealand's Richie McCaw in 2011 and 2015.

Needless to say, it was a huge spectacle at the Stade de France and Chelsea icon Drogba seemingly couldn't miss out on the glorious occasion. The Ivorian great was spotted mingling with former Boks players Tendai Mtawarira before the final got underway. The former striker is a firm promoter of Africa and often shows support to athletes doing well and putting the continent on the map.

Simply known as 'The Beast', Mtwarira is Springbok royalty, as he was part of the 2019 world cup-winning squad in Japan. Drogba, meanwhile, also congratulated Kolisi for the massive achievement, remarking: "What a man, Siya Kolisi. [A] back-to-back World Champ."

Football matters

Drogba also attended the 2023 Afcon draw earlier this month, as his country is set to host the tournament in January 2024. Cote d'Ivoire were drawn in group A alongside rivals Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, and Guinea-Bissau.

"It is a very difficult group. Nigeria is of course one of the favourites and to have them in our group, it is going to be an exciting challenge," said Drogba when reacting to the draw.

"But we are up for it. This is the beauty of a competition like AFCON, so we are ready to take on the challenge and let the best teams of this group and all the groups qualify."

Meanwhile, Drogba's national side also recently played out to a 1-1 draw with Bafana Bafana during the recent international break.
