An American mother is facing a slew of charges, including child endangerment, after video footage emerged of her daughter falling out of her vehicle while she was driving, CNN reports.

Dashcam footage taken by a man, who was driving behind her, captured the moment the child was flung out of the car as Maimuna Hassan, 40, made a turn on a busy road.

After the two-year-old exits the car, the man immediately stops to remove the child from the road. The child, who was not named to protect her identity, was not injured during the incident which occurred on 14 January.

Maimuna now faces a number of charges including a gross misdemeanour charge of child endangerment and a petty misdemeanour charge for child passenger restraint not fastened.

If found guilty, she could be sentenced to a year in jail and fined $3 000 (about R41 630, 70). The other charges carry sentences of up to 90 days or a $1 000 (about R13 882, 05) fine.

Police who arrived at the scene say Maimuna told them, through a translator, that the door of her 2004 Honda Civic "popped open" before the child fell out.

She claims "the child was secure and must have unlocked it".

When she noticed that the child was not in the car, she drove up the street and parked before walking back to where the incident occurred.

She is due to appear in court on 14 February.
