The iSchoolAfrica Deaf Developers Program celebrated the graduation of its 2023 class. Eight of their students completed a post-graduate certificate in iOS app development. This program, supported by SAB Foundation and Core Group, is an initiative that aims to empower deaf youth with in-demand tech skills with the aim of creating more inclusive workplaces.

The program was given more fuel with the recent recognition of South African Sign Language as the 12th official language in South Africa. It also addresses the challenge of disabled youth unemployment and the need for more diversity in the tech industry. The students learned how to code in Swift, Apple's programming language, and developed their own apps that showcase their creativity and problem-solving abilities.

Michelle Lissoos, Director of iSchoolAfrica, expressed her pride and optimism.

iSchoolAfrica Deaf Developers Program looked to empower the people who took part by giving them the skills and tools to code in Swift.

"The Deaf Developers Program is a game-changer for these talented young people and for society at large. We want to see them succeed in their careers and contribute to the innovation and growth of the tech sector. We also hope that this program will inspire other businesses to embrace inclusivity and diversity as a source of strength and opportunity."

The Deaf Developers Program is an exciting opportunity for deaf learners to acquire the skills and knowledge to create apps that can address the challenges faced by people with disabilities.

“Our students will not only develop apps that can make a difference in the lives of others, but also showcase their potential as developers in inclusive work environments. We want to break the stereotypes and barriers that prevent the employment of youth with disabilities.

”We believe that their success will benefit not only the disabled community, but also the whole society. And we are proud to launch this program as the first of many cohorts that will empower Deaf developers.”

This comprehensive nine-month long journey covers various aspects of app development and provides practical experience. Each participant is given an Apple MacBook for the duration of the program, ensuring they have the necessary tools to engage with the curriculum. A unique approach is used that includes South African Sign Language (SASL) interpreters, ensuring clear and smooth communication. By the end of the course, participants are equipped to take on real world projects, applying their new skills and gaining valuable experience.

One of the innovations of this program is that it has added more than 100 new coding terms to the sign language dictionary, as some coding terms were not part of South African Sign Language. This enriches the language further and makes coding more accessible for Deaf learners.

iSchoolAfrica Disability Inclusion Program Manager, Chelsea Williamson highlighted the importance of this initiative.

“Inclusion is not just a word; it’s a necessity. The Deaf Developers Program gives Deaf learners a chance to shine, enabling them to use their talents in the tech sector.”
