Born out of disillusionment and a fervent desire for change, ActionSA emerged on August 29, 2020, propelled by Herman Mashaba's "people's dialogue" project initiated in December 2019. Mashaba articulates the sentiment, stating, "I'm not in politics because I want to be; I'm in politics because I hate what has been done to our country, and that's what I want to rectify."
