An 11-year-old girl from Prince George’s County in Washington has been charged with first degree child abuse after assaulting a 1-year-old boy she was meant to care for, which ultimately led to his death, according to The Washington Post

The 1-year-old who has been identified as Paxton Davis sustained severe injuries to his upper body after being assaulted by the 11-year-old girl whose identity is being kept anonymous because she is a juvenile.

The 11-year-old girl was left to care for Davis after her mother who was babysitting him had to run an errand in the morning – according to Prince George's County Police Major Brian Reilly,

“It was an innocent friendly agreement to watch the child, that obviously turned absolutely tragic,” he explained to Fox5DC

Although the motive behind the attack remains unknown, the young girl admitted to detectives that she assaulted the toddler, and has since been committed to a juvenile facility.

According to BET, Maryland law clearly stipulates that a child cannot be left unattended to without supervision of a reliable person who is at least 13 years old – as it stands the girl’s mother who was entrusted to care for little Davidson has not yet been charged.
