It was supposed to be a normal Saturday night, as Asanda and his friends shared a couple of beers and chilled at a local pub in Gqebera, formerly Port Elizabeth. But suddenly he saw his female friend being forcefully grabbed by a man in the dark.

Asanda Ndlebe (35) leapt to her defence and sustained terrible injuries for his courage, including being left blind in one eye. He speaks to Drum about that terrible night.

“The incident happened two weeks ago, and I was with a female friend of mine from my area. We went to a local pub and while I was sitting there drinking, something said to me I should go outside and pee. I went outside and that’s when I saw a man forcing my female friend to leave with him," he tells us.
