It’s one of the days ushering in winter but the sun is out. As we open the gate and go around the burnt clay brick house to the kitchen door in the heart of Soshanguve in Pretoria, it gets colder and quieter.

After knocking at the wide-open door, which is strangely usual in townships because almost anyone is welcome, chatters grow audible. Right ahead, sits Thomas Buthelezi – the father to Thabisile and Prudence Buthelezi who warmly responds to our greetings with a smile, signaling permission to enter.

Beside him stands the doctor in the family, Prudence, who had been expecting us.
