Exactly one year ago, rapper ProKid (real name Linda Mkhize) died of a bleeding pancreas.
He suffered a hemosuccus pancreaticus – which is a rare cause of gastrointestinal bleeding.
The nation was shocked by his sudden death but his girlfriend, Mandisa Mbanjwa was particularly crushed.
The 32-year-old says she didn’t know at the time how she would survive without the him and a year later she still lights candles and plays his music whenever she misses him.
“I always feel like he’ll be waiting for me when I come home,” she tells DRUM.
ProKid took his last breath at Mandisa’s three-bedroom flat in the Joburg CBD. He was 37-years-old. She still lives in the same apartment, she tells us.
“I think I am not ready to let go.”

When ProKid died there was a lot of drama surrounding their relationship and his marriage to his wife Ayanda.
His family first claimed he died at his friend’s house but later it was revealed that he died at his lover’s house.
“I was not a nyatsi (sidechick) but his queen,” she says just to set the record straight. Mandisa alleged that they had been staying together for a year.
ProKid’s father, Zwelakhe Kheswa took the initiative to meet with Mandisa after the funeral just to find closure. The family has even performed a cleansing ritual for her as well and two months ago, she was taken to his grave since she was barred from attending the funeral.
“I know I will have peace one day. I feel strong inside and I am happy that he is resting easy. He will always be my guardian angel.”
Like days when she misses him, today Mandisa will light the candle, listen to his music and watch some of his unseen videos to celebrate his life.
“I will never forget him and what we shared. The words he said to me are engraved in my heart. I will forever be grateful that God gave us a chance to be together.”
She plans to visit his grave on 9 August just to celebrate Women’s Day next to the love of her life.
