Sicelo 'Seekay' Buthelezi says when he discovered the theatre, it felt like he found heaven.

Sicelo ‘Seekay’ Buthelezi wears many hats – actor and musician among them.

His journey into acting began in 2006, when a friend introduced him to the enchanting world of theatre. "It felt like I was in a small heaven," Buthelezi recalls.

It seems the passion for acting kept lingering in his mind because shortly after completing his matric year in he came across the Market Theatre Laboratory two-year programme.

“That’s when I knew that acting was my calling,” he says.

His latest venture sees him stepping into the role of Toby in Skeem Saam, a mischievous university student stirring up the drama in Turfloop.

"I'm excited to see how viewers connect with Toby," Buthelezi shares eagerly. "The storyline touches on real issues in our society, and I think it'll spark some interesting conversations."

On set, Buthelezi's camaraderie with the cast and crew is palpable. "It's inspiring," he enthuses.

"The cast and crew are very welcoming. It felt like I've worked with some of these people before. Overall, I'm very much happy with finding myself within the well-oiled machine and still being able to operate."

Buthelezi's creativity extends beyond acting into the realm of music. "This year, I'm diving into my music," he reveals. "It's a big project for me, alongside Skeem Saam. There's also a couple of things that I wanna launch later on in the year that I feel like the people receiving my kind of work will definitely enjoy."

When it comes to dream roles, Buthelezi takes an open-minded approach. "I'm open to any possibility," he declares. "As an actor, I want to challenge myself and explore the unknown."

He finds the concept of dream role quite limiting to his craft. According to the 25-year-old, focusing on an ultimate goal limits a person from moving forward in life because once you’ve achieved it what else is next?

Staying motivated in the fast-paced world of entertainment is no easy feat, but Buthelezi finds inspiration in the greats. "I study the greats a lot," he shares.

"South Africa is like a laboratory of great artists, and I'm constantly learning from their stories and experiences."

Looking ahead, Buthelezi's horizon is filled with endless possibilities. "Well as an actor you don’t want to limit yourself," he reflects.

"When it comes to projects, I am just patient with the way my music is brewing until the world is ready to receive a body of work from me. I’m gonna keep cooking."

With only a few years in the industry, Buthelezi remains humble yet eager for growth.

"Every day there's something new to learn."
