There's no better time than right now – at least, not for him.

He's shown his versality, first as an actor, then as a DJ.

He's now showing Mzansi what else he can offer, with a recently dropped EP that consists of six tracks telling his life story.

Actor Clement Maosa believes he's going to knock this one out of the park too.

"I have always been a musician before I got into the industry as an actor. I thought it is the perfect time to let that part of me shine again."

The SABC 1 Skeem Sam actor is ready for this new chapter.

His journey in music is inspired by his Christian background, he shares. When he was younger, he was part of a school choir and later became a conductor, which fueled his passion for music.

In 2019 he released a house song, but he wasn’t sure that he wants to focus on music, because he was trying to find himself.

“My first break into the industry was through acting, and by that time when I got the opportunity, I decided not to pursue music because I wanted to focus on acting and establish myself as an actor first.”

He released his six-track EP titled Humble Beginnings, a body of work that is inspired by his background. He was raised by a single mother in a village in Limpopo and she worked as a domestic worker and made sure he had everything he needed.

As someone who comes from a disadvantaged background, who has faced hardships, and has embraced his culture, he wants to own and tell his story.

Clement says he was in a good space when he decided to start recording.

He's always surrounded by musicians and would often be in studio hanging out with friends.

The first song he recorded was by chance, his friends were recording and needed someone to put in the vocals, and he was around so he did it.

“It felt amazing to be in the booth and record a song, it was that feeling that made me decide that it is about time I went back to making music. But also, I think musically South Africa is in an interesting space with the Amapiano wave and the whole world is taking an interest in our sound, so I thought they couldn’t be a better time.”

He's always believed he is a storyteller.

"And I consider myself to be an all-around artist. I have decided to use my talents to tell stories, and I am a big fan of telling our African stories.

“I have been telling my story through acting, expressing myself through that medium. It will be the same with music, I think this is the talent I have so I want to share my story through music. I grew up listening to music and it has always been a huge part of my life. To introduce myself as a musician and allow people into my space, I will use music to let people in.”

He says he loves the process of making music when he is in the studio and getting to work with like-minded people.

He learns a lot from the people he collaborates with, and that process is more exciting to him than being on stage performing because he gets time to listen to the music and allow it to make him feel a certain way.

"Whenever I decide to release a song, it is because I listened to it first and it meant a lot and touched me.

“If I listen to a song and it can bring out certain emotions, then it is bound to do the same to the people that will receive the song and that is what I want my music to do to the next person. I do enjoy the process of making music and it is another way to express myself.”

The EP is available on all digital platforms.

He says there are a lot of people from abroad who come to South Africa for our sound and our stories.

"The stories that I am telling through my music are the stories of my people, my community, my province, and my country as well as everything that has to do with being black in South Africa.

“During Covid-19 I had enough time to record music and had enough songs that I can pick from for my EP. I called the EP Humble Beginning because I was passionate about sharing my music with the world and the people, I worked with we share similar experiences.

"We come from nothing, and we worked our way up to success. This project is also dedicated to my late mother. This project is personal because I wish my mom was still around to see what I have become in life and how her teachings have carried me throughout the years. Mothers play an important role in our upbringing and I have never opened up about the kind of relationship I had with my mother.”
