When she released her single John Cena in 2019, it became an instant hit across the country and fast made its way to international platforms.

Singer, and poet Maya “Sho Madjozi” Wegerif (29) even made it onto the Ellen DeGeneres Show where she got a surprise visit from wrestling legend himself, John Cena.

The sing-along was a fan favourite, and she then released her album titled What A Life featuring the likes of Limpopo legend Thomas Chauke, Russian Army, DJ Mfundhisi, Makhadzi, and many others.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic hit Sho Madjzoi has kept a low profile. She disappeared from the music scene and did not even attend the 27th South African Music Awards (SAMAs) where she won the Sofnfree Female Artist of the Year award.

Taking to social media, Sho Madjozi explains her sudden silence.

“Thank you to everyone that has been checking on me. I was dealing with some hurt and confusion," she says.

“I discovered two people on my team trying to steal which led me to discover all sorts of dodgy things they had been doing to block my opportunities for over a year.”

Without giving out too much detail, the Huku singer says she needed to take time out.

“I won’t say I’m completely fine. Swa vava cos I come from way back with those people. But I have enjoyed taking time for myself and I have too many things to be excited about.”

She has since gotten new management and moved on.

“I’ve got new management, I’m looking cute, my new music sounds mad and I can’t wait to roll it out,” she says.

Sho Madjozi features on Tanzanian actress and singer Nandy’s single Kunjani.

“In the meantime, enjoy the Kunjani music video by Nandy with a Swahili verse by me (the Konyagi one).”

She advised people to take regular breaks from social media as she did.

“In general, I still strongly advocate for long social media breaks. Social media is great, but I also find it extremely heavy and distracting. If you’re like me, it’s ok. You’re a soft, living thing. We aren’t really built to be inundated by an endless stream of interaction,” she says.

“How are you guys though? What did I miss? Good news only, please. Cos you know the bad news spreads itself. What’s some good stuff that’s been happening?” she asked.

“Mina I miss doing my long threads and connecting with people who share the loves of my heart; I.e poetry, talking about Africa, etc. Maybe I’ll start posting a bit more @mayawegerif (her poetry Twitter page).”
