Unlike a lot of musicians in the industry, the musical dream doesn’t date back to his childhood.

Growing up, he wanted to be a soccer player. His mind, heart and focus were on the field.

If it were up to him, he would’ve been a professional soccer player.

However, between 2016 and 2017, he found his rhythm of life.

Allowing music to take over his life, he went from DJing to being a music producer.

Even in this though, he always knew that he had the ear for any kind of music.

“I would listen to different types of genres, RnB, soul, house, deep house, I was just a versatile person when it came to music. Whatever sounded nice to me, I would listen and be satisfied,” Sam Deep tells Drum.

Born Samukelo Mavuso, the music producer remembers music overtaking his love for soccer in high school.

Whenever he would need to be studying for his exams, he would be preoccupied by music; either cooking some beats or

“It just switched up, I really can’t be specific on how it really happened, it’s something that just happened,” he adds.

Three years later, he met Ace of Spades records members who are Da Muziqal Chef, De Mthuda, Njelic amongst others.

Ever since then, he has been working closely with the big names of the industry.

When his Kusezo Khanya hit song dropped, many were introduced to him while some gravitated towards loving his sound.

Although this dropped after his EP which dropped in 2021, Sam acknowledges that Kusezo Khanya gave him his first breakthrough.

“When I record or work with a vocalist, I don’t specifically tell the vocalist that this is how you should sing. My form of communication is through the beats so as soon as someone walks into the studio, we connect musically,” he says.

“What I can do is if that person has an idea, I can add on to it or add a rhythm [but nothing more than that,” says the Soweto-born music producer.

He tells Drum the beat for the song was already made before he could even meet Babalwa M, who is the vocalist in the song. He had no idea what could come out of it.

From this hit to the next which became iMpumelelo, the theme of his songs is predominantly positive, motivational and gives on the right kick to keep pushing in life.

Speaking more about how this is a common thread in his songs, he says his soulful beats make way for the vocalists’ lyrics as a result of their spiritual connection.

This time around though, he’s released an album titled from a prophecy he has spoken to his life.

For him, Imali Yentwana is his way of drawing in more money bags for himself through what he loves.

“I wanted people to experience a different side of me musically and not only know me as Sam Deep, the one-hit wonder. I feel like in this album, I was introducing myself and what kind of person I am. This is the album that’s going to open new doors for me, it’s the album where I am going to get my biggest bag. I feel like it’s [another] breakthrough and it also makes a statement for the Sam Deep brand.”

Elaborating on the statement he wants to make from the album, the music head says, “I just wanted people to strongly believe in me and my brand and that I can do it.”

With more songs still awaiting to be released, he ends the interview by saying that his supporters must keep an eye out for it all.
