If there’s anything he does best besides loving his wife loudly, it’s traveling.

This time around though, Dr Musa Mthombeni has taken a solo international trip without his wife. In an Instagram post, he admits to missing Liesl Laurie-Mthombeni as everything that could possibly go wrong on the international trip, has gone wrong.

Musa is attending a radiology conference in Chiang Mai, Thailand but as per Mthombeni tradition, he will also be exploring tourist sites, attractions and the local cuisine during his stay.

“It's a globally conducted anatomy and disease management course, and this year it’s being hosted in Chiang Mai, Thailand. This experience will contribute to my career toward a more defined path, specifically in Interventional Neuroradiology, which entails endovascular management of conditions like brain aneurysms, AVMs, and other complex issues.”

Despite having missed his flight and forgotten his charger at home, Musa has top travel tips up his sleeve.

“Be as comfortable as possible – as you are most comfortable at home. As you get ready, pick the most comfortable outfit, put on the most comfortable shoes, and pack your carry-on with essentials for a pleasant flight experience.”

“Check in as early as you can so you can pick the seat that you want, and if you know that your bladder is small, preferably pick an aisle seat so that can jump out without bothering too many people. I can usually sit for many hours without having to move. I am a lover of movies and series, so in-flight entertainment excites me and keeps me entertained for the long flight,” adds the 33-year-old.

The former child star and YoTv presenter shares the essentials that he always has in his carry-on bag.

“With me I take all entertainment things, so I carry my laptop or an iPad and headphones. But importantly, I also carry on the basic goodies that I need on a long-haul flight [like my skincare products] I've got the L'Oréal Men Expert Hydra Energetic range, which includes a face wash, a moisturiser and of course, I use sunscreen. If you are flying during the day and the cabin's windows are open, you should apply sunscreen.

“I also recommend you travel with your own toothbrush and toothpaste, just in case you don't like what you're going to get on board.”

When travelling internationally, some people are prone to being jet-lagged and even suffering motion sickness or discomfort on flights.

However, for him, that’s not the case.

“I'm generally not used to sleeping long periods of time, so I don't have to deal or combat jet lag, even across multiple time zones. I like arriving a day or two early to help adjust to the local time. But upon arriving at your destination, I strongly suggest you try and force yourself to sleep and once you have adjusted to the time zone, start experiencing things.”

On motion sickness and discomfort, he advises that travellers buy over-the-counter medication for that.

“For anyone that does experience motion sickness; over-the-counter medications are available. Additionally, relaxation techniques and personal entertainment can help alleviate discomfort during flights.”

With his frequent travels with his wife, many people wonder how and when he gets the time to travel when he’s juggling two careers in different industries – medical and entertainment at the same time.

“I make time to travel. You will never reach a point in your life where you find yourself available to travel. Retirement is too far for you to say you will travel then. I’ll have too many broken bones to really enjoy traveling. So, I make the time. Even if you find yourself losing money in the short run, do it. If you have leave days, take the leave days. So as much as you can while you’re still young and are able to travel because the future isn't guaranteed, and anything can happen.”

Beyond just exploring different countries, he says travelling has opened his eyes a world outside his bubble which has helped him grow.

With an interesting liking to North America, the TV host and radiologist lists destinations remaining to tick off from his bucket list.

-          Japan - It’s not like an Anime thing, it’s just the culture. It’s something I think I must do it in the next year or two.

-          Iceland - I want to see volcanos; I want to do all kinds of crazy things.

-          Antarctica - I’ve had a chat with my wife Liesl about this and she is not about it at all. So, I’ve still got a lot of convincing to do there.

-          Out of space - I don’t know how I’m going to achieve this. Maybe we wait for one of the commercial (TV advertisement) guys to make it viable, but I really want to go to out of space.

-          Miami

-          Texas

-          Los Angeles
