Miss Pru DJ paused on making music to focus on growing her beauty and wellness spa
Miss Pru DJ paused on making music to focus on growing her beauty and wellness spa

She never did anything 'by the book'. So much so that her parents were not sure about her career path.

Her parents wanted her to be a teacher, doctor, or scientist but she chose her path and worked to make sure that she made her parents proud.

As a young girl, award-winning DJ Miss Pru pictured herself as a beauty therapist.

Seeing how people felt when they visited spas or went for manicures and pedicures made her aspire to be a beauty therapist one day. After matriculating, in 2019 she studied a somatology course at the University of Johannesburg. She worked in beauty parlours and hotels until she got into music.

“After I was done with the course, that is when I started deejaying. As the years went by, my passion for beauty therapy got the better of me. I felt that I needed to go back to the field, but I didn’t want to go back to the field as a beauty therapist. In 2019 I went back to school and studied business management just to understand the business. When I finished the course, I did my postgrad degree and then graduated in 2023.”

Pru, real name Prudence Malesedi Sebola, says she opened her own beauty spa.

Sedi Beauty and Wellness Spa in Rivonia opened first in April, and again officially in May where she felt she was ready to focus on her business.

“I am not fully focusing on the business; I am still making music. I needed a bit of time to make sure that the business grew before I could go back to making music. It was after my postgrad degree that I decided to open my spa because I now know how to run a business and the experience of how to run a beauty spa. I found some beauty therapists who work with me while I focus on the admin and managing the spa.”

Understanding that she will need money for her business to come to life, Miss Pru says she started with the essentials needed to run a business. She then added on while it is operating.

“I had zero on my account when I thought about opening the spa. However, with the little money that I had, I bought a bed, towels, and other stuff that would make it possible for me to run the spa and put them aside. Once I had the basics, I knew that I could run the business and as the business operates, I would buy other things. It took me some time to put everything together, but I did it and I am proud that eight months later the business is still running. I can now think about going back to the studio and making music or even getting gigs.”

She says believing in her dreams has kept her going and inspired her to work even harder because her parents were not supportive of her being both a DJ and a beauty therapist, but they are now proud of her.

“I had to work hard, and school helped me to focus and make sure that the business became a success. My parents were against what I was doing, but I have always been a person who decides and sticks to it. Both the music and business have haunted me and once I got into it, I made sure I gave it my all and now my parents can’t stop talking about me, even though they didn’t understand what I am doing.”

Miss Pru plans to release more music. She released her album Bavumile last year and she says she wants to promote it more this year and give her music lovers more hits.
