After a four-year hiatus, Limpopo’s much anticipated festival is back.

Hailed as the festival that brought Makhadzi out into the industry and gave Sphesihle Vazi his Selimathunzi breakthrough about a decade ago, the Royal Heritage Festival returns with a line-up that makes up for the years it didn’t take place in.

The event, previously known as the Royal Gardens Festival, celebrates the rich cultural heritage in the Northern province and promotes tourism.

This year, it will be hosted at the Nandoni dam in the Vhembe district of Limpopo on 16 September and its stage will be graced by performances from over 40 artists.

While Makhadzi, MacG and Mina Nawe hitsong-maker Mashudu Mosoeu were some of the performing artists that made an appearance at the media launch, many more make up the long diverse line-up.

The three international artists namely Leonard Zhakata, Mark Ngwazi and Mr Bow will be flying in from Zimbabwe and Mozambique respectively for the festival.

Acts that proudly represent their own provinces and carry their own heritage on their backs such as Big Zulu and Pleasure tsa Manyalo will also be on stage alongside some of the country’s favourites such as Young Stunna, Boohle, Musa Keys, Murumba Pitch, Nadia Nakai, Lulo Café and Msizi Shembe.

The list goes on and on with the names of upcoming artists and Limpopo-based artists.

Talking to Drum, Hamba Juba hitmaker Lady Amar says she cannot wait to bring the vibes needed on the Limpopo stage next month.

Scandal! actress Mapaseka Koetle’s younger sister, DJ Sedy on the other hand says she will also be taking out her new song into the world during her performance.

“I have a song that I produced myself so it’s going to be a part of the set.”

Although she does not want to spoil her surprise, she let out that it is an Amapiano song.

With two fairly big songs released in the past year with Mfana kah Gogo including Azul, DJ Karri says he also has more new songs on the radar that will form part of his set as well.

“I’m so excited about the event, I will be playing my upcoming songs that will be in my album that I’m dropping next year and also, I have a very special song that I’m going to play there. I’m sure people are going to love it, it’s a surprise and will be a very big song,” he says.

The only clue he could give us is that he made the surprise song with a French music producer and DJ.
