When Beyoncé first released the trailer of her visual album, Black is King, everyone had their eyes glued to it. There were factions of excited fans, critics and those who were just curious to watch it all over social media.
The singer’s “passion project”, as she calls it, was originally a companion piece to The Lion King: The Gift soundtrack, which she curated herself.

What is different about this visual body of work is that it takes you through American black history and African tradition “with a modern twist and a universal message”, the singer captioned an Instagram post. “I spent a lot of time exploring and absorbing the lessons of past generations and the rich history of different African customs.”
The 38-year-old star is known for making people sign non-disclosure agreements, such as when nobody suspected that the visuals for her album Lemonade were in the works. South Africans were very shocked to see their own in the trailer. John Kani, Connie Chiume and Warren Masemola are among some of the local celeb in Black is King’s trailer.
That excitement soon faded as South Africans were disappointed to learn that the visual album will only be shown on Disney+, the company’s streaming platform that is not available in the SA.
However, M-Net recently announced that they will be screening Black is King across the African continent on Saturday 1 August at 8pm. This will be 24 hours within its debut on Disney+. This comes after the channel acquired rights from The Walt Disney Company to screen the visuals.
