Kwaito and Lizzy have officially tied the knot.
Kwaito and Lizzy have officially tied the knot.

Traditional beer has brewed. The wedding dance step has been mastered.

All the cows have been fully paid and ululations are loud in the Turfloop township in Limpopo.

Nerves were high and fears lingered on the first day of Kwaito and Lizzy’s wedding on Skeem Saam.

For many, the highlight was the hip dance moves that were busted on the aisle when Kwaito entered with his entourage on Friday.

The second day of the wedding put the bow to the matrimonial festivities.

For Zamokuhle ‘Kwaito’ Seakamela, who is played by Clement Maosa, the wedding made him realise how much he’s grown into and with the character that he plays on the soapie.

“It is quite overwhelming for me because it’s more of a realization that I’ve been playing this role for so long, more than a decade now. We’ve explored him so much, we’ve seen him as a teenager, writer, we’ve seen him go to varsity, we’ve seen him as an intern, educator and now as a husband. What I appreciate more as Clement is that all these years, I’ve had the opportunity to cry, laugh and go through different stages of life with this character.”

From his late teenage years, Kwaito has had a tumultuous love life. He has been hurt and has even broken hearts himself but with his growth, he consciously decided to make things with Elizabeth Thobakagale who had his arch nemesis in high school as they were competing for the top academic spots in class.

Recently, fans of the soapie warmed up to his vulnerability as he made his intentions clear with Elizabeth, who is played by Amanda Manku.

“I’ve always known that one day he’ll be ready to get married, but I wasn’t expecting him to be ready this sooner. I thought he’d still be playing around and later on when he’s like 35, that’s when he would’ve done it all and would be ready to commit. He’s been around, he’s been a womanizer and he seemed to enjoy that more than being committed,” he admits during his break from practicing his lines on set.

To get to this point, Clement says it took a lot to mature romantically and finally choose the love of his life.

“As a performer, you sort of borrow from your life experiences to bring the character to life. Now Clement is mature in life and now Kwaito is also getting to mature so it’s easier to borrow from my real life to give Kwaito the maturity that he needs.”

Although he is not married himself, he spends a lot of time with married people and through conversations, he gets to understand the dynamics of marriage. For this season in his life in particular, this is how he prepared for it.

Leading up to the two-day wedding, the lovebirds were faced with trials and tribulations, namely finances and their mothers who were not in support of their relationship.

The biggest one for Kwaito though was finances because he had to prove that he could take care of a qualified doctor as his partner.

“One thing that I’ve personally realised as a person is that there isn’t an easy way out of any situation, especially because we as men think that money is everything. To an extent, it is correct that a man must be a provider, but I think we also overexaggerate it because to societal standards, you can’t get married when you don’t have money,” he tells Drum.

“I believe love should take priority and people can take care of each other and love each other. Love should not be defined by how financially-well you are."

More than anything, Clement loves how close this storyline was to reality like most storylines on the soapie.

After the wedding, he gears up to not only be a husband but the man of the house in the double-storey house that he has just finished building for his mother. Fingers are crossed that chaos doesn’t reign when junior Mrs Seakamela moves in and there are two women calling shots in the house.
