Being on The Masked Singer was the craziest and most fun thing the singer has ever done this year.

It’s usually glazed and colourful.

Always delicious and ready to satisfy the sweet tooth one has. But this past Sunday, you couldn’t eat the round fried dough.

The reason for this is that it was not edible because it was Shekinah.

Disguised as an adorable doughnut on The Masked Singer, the singer and songwriter brought the house down with Rihanna’s Pon De Replay which opened the show.

After a few guesses making the rounds amongst the detectives – Skhumba Hlophe, Somizi, J’Something and Sithelo Shozi, Shekinah fell out of the top six disguised performers on the show.

Speaking to Drum about it, she says she was not ready to lose the battle of anonymity because she had more performances up her sleeve.

“First of all, I didn’t want to be unmasked yet, but it happened. Overall, The Masked Singer was just the craziest and [most fun] thing I’ve done this year. I enjoyed myself.

“I had more to offer! I had prepared other songs that I feel like might have set off people more but if I were to go back, I would try and hide in plain sight. I would try and be more like me, so people don’t think it’s me.”

Acknowledging that the songs she sang were quite different from her own songs, she also says, “The truth about me is [that] I suck at singing anyone else’s songs beside my own. That’s honestly why I write my own music. So, the song choices were really the best that I could do.”

Having won four South African Music Awards and been a magazine cover girl are just two one of the clues that helped the detectives figure out that it was none other than her behind the mic in a costume.

From the clues, many also found out that her career was kickstarted by a friend after she made it only to the top five of Idols season eight and also that she is an adopted child.

For her, coming up with these clues was “as good as they could get”.

“I use my voice for a living, so it was kind of hard to disguise that it was me, I guess.”

To prepare for the Rihanna song, the award-winning singer says she put in more effort to embody it as compared to her songs.

“I had to try and be sassy and my music is very chilled, it’s not too high-energy and I feel like Rihanna was high [energy and very sassy at the time] but it’s fine because I enjoyed embodying that,” she says.

As for the adorable doughnut costume, the 28-year-old chose it because she is a foodie at heart.

“I love food, so I felt like that was a good representation of me.”

Besides the international show, the musician has bought a studio and is cooking up more songs.

Keeping her cards close to her chest, Shekinah couldn’t disclose when exactly more songs and an album were going to be released but just said “soon”.
