‘I am numb,’ says Somizi Mhlongo as tributes continue to pour in for late amapiano icon DJ Sumbody

He cemented his iconic amapiano status with his hit song, Monate Mpolaye, in which he featured celebrated rapper Cassper Nyovest and the legendary kwaito artist, Thebe.

There has been an outpouring of grief around the country since the news of DJ Sumbody's death was announced on Sunday afternoon.

His management confirmed the news in a press statement, saying that “details of his untimely death cannot be released but artist named, Oupa John Sefoka allegedly ran into an unfortunate incident that led to his passing in the early hours of Sunday morning, 20 November (sic)".

“Details surrounding his passing cannot be disclosed as investigations are still ongoing,” the statement adds.

Sumbody, whose given name is Oupa John Sefoka, is believed to have died in a hail of bullets on the corner of Woodmead and Woodland drives in Sandton.

Gauteng police confirmed in a statement on Sunday that they had launched a manhunt for the suspected murderers.

Posting screenshots of one of their last conversations, media personality and choreographer Somizi Mhlongo shared how the hit-maker was due to perform at the All White Veuve Clicquot Picnic on Sunday.  

“Don’t forget to wear white tomorrow because it’s going to look like we are in heaven,” were Sumbody's words to Somizi in an invite to the picnic.

However, “little did we know that today it’s going to be exactly that – LITERALLY heaven”, a shocked Somizi said on social media.

“I am numb," the Idols SA judge added.

"I no longer know how to feel and react to the news of loss of loved ones. We definitely are living on borrowed time.”

The amapiano star died with his bodyguard. It is alleged that DJ Sumbody was shot over 20 times.

Media personality TBo Touch, singer and actress Nandi Madida and musician Focalistic are among the many celebs who have expressed their heartbreak over amapiano hitmaker's passing.

Police indicate in their statement that they are searching for suspects and investigating circumstances that led to a shooting in Woodmead where two people died and one seriously injured.

“Police received a complaint about a shooting incident the corner of Woodmead and Woodland drive at approximately 00:30. Upon arrival at the scene, police found two people inside a VW Golf with gunshot wounds. Both victims, a driver and passenger were certified dead on the scene.”

The police appeal to anyone with information that can help in their investigation to call them on 08600 10111.
