It could be the wedding of the year, at least when it comes to soapies. It's also the first wedding on The Queen since season one.

Harriet and Hector (played by Connie Ferguson and Rapulana Seiphemo) said their vows at the  Avianto Wedding and Conference Centre.

How did it all come together?

Harriet walked down the aisle in a dress made by the famous Birgit “Biji” Gibbs La Maison de Couture, who also made Zozibini Tunzi's beaded black-and-white dress that she wore when she has crowned Miss Universe in 2019.

Biji often designs Connie Ferguson’s dresses. The design of Harriet's wedding dresses was a collective effort that included the art director, wardrobe department and Connie herself.

A lot goes into putting together a big TV wedding, so Drum had a chat with art director Odette Earle, who shared the details of how they put together such an event.

She says the goal was to make it legendary because people who grew up watching Generations still remember Karabo and Tau’s big day. She says because of Harriet’s character, they wanted to go over the top but still keep it classical, and gracious and ensure that it is proper.

Odette is no stranger to doing TV weddings and her trick is to ensure that the wedding she is currently working on is different from the previous one she did. She says she is required to think out of the box and working with a team always helps to bring those fresh ideas.

“Bearing in mind that viewers draw some of their wedding inspirations from the show, you always have to come up with new things and different ways of doing stuff. This wedding was unconventional in a lot of ways. With the ceremony, we removed the chairs because you always want to do something different from the previous wedding and set different trends because that is why we are here,” Odette says.

“This wedding is legendary because people grew up with Generations [and saw] Karabo and Tau getting married. With that standard being set, people expect this to be next level, and to be bigger and better than what they saw before. Because they are such a loving couple, you do not want to disappoint the audience,” she says.

Odetter says the reason why they went with black and white is because she was inspired by the game of chess –  Harriet, who is The Queen, has finally found the King.

“Nono events are behind is the amazing brain behind the décor of the day," she added. "She always comes on board when we do events, and the wedding cake was sponsored by Chef Zondi who always sponsors our weddings.”
