Initially established as The African Drum, the first black lifestyle magazine in Africa rose to its grandeur for its extensive documentation of township stories in the 1950s.
Within its first decade, it became the largest circulating magazine, rooted in transforming black identity in society.
In the year that women of colour reclaimed their power back, this cover hit the “shelves” to cement black people’s place in urban city life.
To remind you how far we’ve come, we recreated this cover based on a typical black-love story - A Soweto Love Story.
Coincidentally, this is the same year it’s so important to know your history enough to determine your future ahead of the “2024 is our 1994” elections.
In the spirit of Mr Drum, Henry Nxumalo, and the rest of the Drum Boys, Todd Matshikiza, Can Themba, Nat Nakasa, Lewis Nkosi, here's a sneak peek into the making of this year’s first digital cover, with actors Motsoaledi Setumo and Lunga Shabalala.
