Big Xhosa on his viral diss track – 'I will be the biggest artist in South Africa'

He thinks Nasty C uses too much English in his raps, Cassper Nyovest has a goat beat according to him and he believes Kwesta is the skinny version of Rick Ross. 

In fact, all South African hip hop rappers need to pick up their socks, he says. He mentioned all this in a diss track that's gone viral in the country.

Big Xhosa, real name Sesethu Myeki, has caused a buzz with his lyrics. He challenged some of the biggest names in hip hop as he believes they need to be kept on their toes.

We spoke to the 22-year-old rapper who says that he is here to revive SA hip-hop while also making it entertaining for his listeners.

“I am from a small town in the Eastern Cape called Cathcart, I had a rough childhood. We were a lot of grandchildren being raised by my grandmother on her grant money. I fell in love with rapping when I was in high school, I listened to rappers such as AKA and I used to rap to his songs until I realised that I could also rap. I want my raps to evoke emotions out of people by making them smile or laugh although I am not a comedian. I like making people laugh and smile,” he says.

“My recent diss track was motivated by the fact that I noticed that I was receiving a lot of traction on Tiktok. I feel like people are sleeping in the game, I wanted to do something that would make people start rapping again. I did not do it for clout, I did it because I wanted to bring entertainment to hip-hop. I did not think that it would be as big as it is right now. I saw that the game is boring, and I wanted to entertain people.”

Sesethu, who also calls himself SOS, says that there his passion for rap was inspired by rappers such as AKA, Kwesta, Cassper Nyovest and K.O.

“They used to inspire me but now the rapper that I look up to is myself, Big Xhosa. I come from a very hard background and a poor family when I moved to Johannesburg three months ago, I told myself that I am here to make my dreams come true. I need to change the lives of my family members; this is the time for me to work hard. I am hungry to be a success and that drives me each day.”

Big Xhosa is currently working on a body work that he plans to release soon.

“I don’t know if I should call it Minister wempundu or Big Xhosa.”

“I need to bring something new, and we are going through a lot as a country, I want to be a big artist. I will be the biggest artist in South Africa, not rapper but artist. I want to win big accolades for my music, and I want to be a huge success.

“When I go into the mic I give it my all and I just rap. I only received a response from Cassper, I am not really concerned about them not responding to my track. But if they do, it will be a great thing for the hip-hop culture in South Africa. But South African rappers don’t want to respond to me,” he says.

“Rappers must stop treating hip-hop as if it’s a church, its not a church. I like the rappers I mentioned in my song, I believe that they play an important role in hip-hop today. Their hustle inspires me and the fact that they made out of where they were to where they are now, inspires me. I don’t hate any of them.”
