A dinner under the stars.

Not just with anyone but with legends.

From Thembi Seete, Trompies, Stoan, Thebe and DJ Christos, the long table boasted generational talent.

While many wondered about the reason behind the gathering, some had already started picking out possibilities in their head.

Whatever it was, it was for a truly patriotic course.

When the MC Nandi Madida finally let the cat out the bag, applause roared from the head to the tail end of the table.

The proudly South African sneaker brand Bathu was launching a sneaker called Ndofaya in honour of Mandla ‘Spikiri’ Mofokeng, a Trompies group member.

Not only this though, but the night was also dedicated to giving legends their flowers while they’re still alive.

Although the likes of Mdu Masilela, Zola, Mafikizolo and KB Motsilanyane were absent at the dinner, they were also honoured with a Bathu plaque and a R10 000 worth of prizes cheque.

Receiving her honour plaque and cheque, Thembi Seete expressed gratitude for the support that the country showed Boom Shaka over the years.

“We all wouldn’t have been able to do this on our own without people’s support. We thank you so much!”

Stoan, on the other hand, was grateful for life itself after sustaining third-degree burns from a gas explosion accident recently.

“I was involved in a moment that, in retrospect after it happened, I actually had to be grateful for that moment and that it did not turn out as badly as it could’ve turned out. But at the same time, it was a moment for my energies to focus and I found the blessing within it, and it reminded me of a verse I wrote during a covid for a song that ended up being quite fading into oblivion, but the verse remains.”

“Funny enough, it is not a Tswana verse, it is an English verse, but it shows that sometimes inspiration comes, and music is a universal language. Another saying by rastaman is ‘music is a mission, not a competition and no man fuse it with confusion’, and we have to make sure that we carry this mission,” he adds.

After unveiling the sneaker and putting on a throwback show with their performance, the jubilant Trompies had a chat with Drum.

“They say you reap what you sow, and these are the rewards that Spikiri is now getting honoured for by Bathu. We feel great to see that his hardwork is bearing him fruits that are beneficial to the whole group as we are all from Ndofaya (Meadowlands). Remember, Trompies is a big empire which produced Spikiri, Jakarumba, Simply Donald duck, Mahoota, Vetkuk and the late Mjokes, may his soul rest in peace. We feel honoured, we thank the Lord, and we congratulate our brother,” says Jairus ‘Jakarumba’ Nkwe, another longstanding member of the hitmaking kwaito group.

Humble as always, the man himself, Spikiri says he really does feel honoured.

“At least there are brands from kasi (the township) that honour the people who have been in the game for a long time. We’ve been in the game for a long time, so I think we really deserved this as a group as well,” says the man of few words.

Adding on, Eugene Mthethwa who’s also a member of the 29-year-old legendary music group says going forth, they will be seen on stage wearing Bathu sneakers because they have been promoting too many international brands such as Dickies and Converse without being acknowledged and recognised for it.

He also says being respectful, staying down-to-earth and having humility is what has kept them standing tall for so long in the industry.
