You’re experiencing sweet, sweet release when you suddenly hear the roar of thunder.

Is it the rapture? Netflix? The bed breaking? Is it someone banging on your bedroom door at your most intimate moment, or is it a harbinger of early spring rains?

Some people hear a clap of thunder when they have an orgasm – and that’s an SOS. “If it happens to you, you must immediately go to the emergency room,” warns sexologist Dr Elna Rudolph from My Sexual Health.

“It may sound strange, but it can be a sign of a stroke or another serious brain condition that can be life-threatening.

“The thunder sound is usually accompanied by an intense headache. The headache reaches its peak within 60 seconds and is normally short-lived, but one should still go to the emergency room, since it can be a warning sign of a serious brain condition that can possibly be treated to prevent damage,” says the host of VIA’s #Uit Die Slaapkamer.

“This is therefore one of the rare cases in which sex can send you to the emergency room.”

What are some of the other difficult-to-broach but grave occurrences that can transpire during the throes of lovemaking?

Erectile dysfunction may be linked to heart health and symptoms of allergy after sex may be life-threatening, says the sex health guru.

  • DOES YOUR HEART HEALTH HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH YOUR SEXUAL HEALTH?

Cardiovascular health and sex are two things that are often mentioned in the same breath. “The fitter you are, the easier sex is,” explains Dr Rudolph. “You can also have sex in order to become fit, but that would require a lot of sex!

“Heart health is synonymous with sexual health because endothelial cells line the interior of the arteries of both your sexual organs and your heart – in other words, what is good for your heart, is good for sex.

“Men who have sex twice per week have half the risk of getting a heart attack compared to those who don’t enjoy this privilege biweekly. And research has shown that women who are sexually active also have better heart health.”

“Therefore, the more sex you have, the better – for your heart. There is, however, a serious warning,” she adds.

“If your sexual health is suffering, it may be an indication that your heart is in trouble. Research has shown that men who had heart attacks started suffering from erectile dysfunction (ED) approximately four years prior to the heart attack.

“If they visited a doctor at the onset of the ED, made lifestyle changes and used prescription medicine to lose weight and lower their blood pressure and cholesterol, they might have prevented the heart attack.

“It is of utmost importance to visit a knowledgeable medical doctor should you develop sexual problems – it might just save your life.”

  • CAN AN ORGASM REALLY MAKE YOU ILL?

“Many people feel fantastic after an orgasm, without any negative consequences. There are, however, people who feel terribly ill after an orgasm,” says the expert from My Sexual Health.

“Some people get a rash while others get headaches or feel so tired that they can’t get out of bed for days. It is called post-orgasmic illness syndrome.”

“It is, fortunately, very rare, but true indeed. If it happens to you, it is due to one of various brain hormones or other chemical conditions that are prevalent in the body during an orgasm – it can make you ill in the same way that a histamine release during an allergic reaction makes you ill.

“So, it is true that one can be allergic to sex. If you feel ill after an orgasm, reach out for help. There are some things that can be done.”
