The orgasms of men aren’t really that different from those of women, says sexologist Dr Elna Rudolph.

"Everyone reaches a peak and then there is a resolution. In women, the resolution is of such a nature that it may pick up again and lead to another orgasm and perhaps even a third, although that doesn’t happen often.

"When men have an orgasm, they 'drop' and have to be aroused anew to have another orgasm."

"The big difference is that men usually ejaculate when they have an orgasm, while women usually don’t," says Dr Rudolph.

"There are women who ejaculate, but not necessarily during the orgasm. The biggest volume of the male ejaculate comes from the prostate.

"In women it appears that some have prostate-like tissue in the area of the so-called G-spot.

"Some women can then ejaculate from this area. It can be a small, inconspicuous quantity or a large volume that may look like someone lost control over their bladder," Dr Rudolph explains.

"Many women do, in fact, lose bladder control during an orgasm or sexual arousal (and some men too!), so it is not always easy to distinguish between the two. There are also other glands around the vaginal opening, similar to those in the male urethra, from which a woman may ejaculate.

"But again: ejaculation and orgasm are not the same thing!

"There is also a difference in duration between the orgasms of men and women – but it is not a case of a five-second-long orgasm for men and a five-minute-long one for women. For men an orgasm normally lasts ten seconds and for women twenty seconds – thus, not really a big difference.

"How intense your orgasm is and how much pleasure you derive from it, differs from person to person. Pleasure is measured by the individual and difficult to compare. To conclude: There is not really a big difference between the orgasms of men and women."
