MESSAGING app WhatsApp will reportedly be increasing the number of participants in a group to 1 024.
According to WABetaInfo, the feature will be released this week for beta testing, where users will have a chance to test it before it’s officially rolled out.
This update comes after the social media giant announced in May that it would slowly be rolling out the ability to add up to 512 people to a group. It’s not clear why it decided to increase the number.
But according to Android Police, allowing that number in a single group seems silly since the number of participants already doubled from 256 to 512 people just months ago.
“However, competitor Telegram already allows for up to 200 000 people to join the same group chat. Having so many people in a group chat is more useful for more enterprise or broadcast purposes where you want to send information to a lot of people but not necessarily have them reply,” Android Police said.
To ensure that this update does not go out of hand, WhatsApp is reportedly working on new tools to give group administrators more control with features such as a list of pending participants and an approval system.
