FOR a small to mid-sized car, it is easy to find balance between unmatched comfort and the best performance.

But as to how the engineers perfectly got that balance with the sleek, seven-seater 3,0-litre Isuzu DDI MU-X 4x4 Onyx Automatic remains a puzzle.

Much credit for this stunning beauty goes to the sharp front of the car with a robust grille, flanked by angular Bi-LED headlights with nicely-lined daytime running lights. The vehicle has 20-inch alloy wheels, which come standard in the Onyx trim.

Bold side-steps make climbing into the car easier.

I must say that wherever we went the passersby could not help but nod in approval of this luxurious SUV.

Getting inside the Onyx, the magic continues as you are greeted by a bold dash which has quality touches everywhere.

There is quality leather on the seats, steering wheel and the gear. Add to that great head and leg room, which adds up to outstanding comfort for all occupants.

There is a button on the right of the steering wheel, which allows the driver to open and close the boot electronically without having to get out, especially in the freezing  weather we find ourselves in these days.

I tested the Onyx when my family was gathering in KZN and I saw my cousins fight for the rear seats because they wanted to nap without being disturbed by conversations from front and middle rows, in this seven-seater.

Everyone hailed me for being a great driver, but I knew that the handling of this SUV is the best.

The suspension is so good.

The high definition, nine-inch infotainment system is perfect with modern smartphone connections and navigation. Please remove the USB ports shutters, they are really not necessary.

Some safety features that make driving this car an absolute bliss include parking sensors, blind-spot monitors, forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control and it has eight airbags.

The 3-litre engine, paired with six-speed automatic transmission, produces 140kW of power and 450Nm torque.

Combined, this all makes the Onyx the best performer, whether you find yourself in open roads or on serious gravel with obstacles.

If you feel like you need to ask for more than what automatic gives you, you have paddle shifters under your fingers on the steering wheel to help you increase or shift down depending on what you want.
