The Citroen C5 Aircross was first revealed as a concept compact SUV back in the Shanghai motor show in 2015. Then, 2017 saw it launched with advanced comfort and good design features.

Last week saw the launch of the much bigger, more beautiful and good performing SUV ready to compete in the mid-size SUV segment.

The front-end styling has a new face, with vertical taut lines contributing to a larger front face for C5 Aircross. Not only does it appear wider and more imposing on the road, but it also looks more daring.

LED headlamps add to the front’s new appeal and under the grille, the new style of the air intake area visually widens the front of C5 Aircross to give it a more imposing stance on the road.

The rear tail lights match the front with their piano-key effect, making the rear look like a different monster on its own.

The chevrons are now black-lacquer, underlined with chrome, visually stretched by a set of increasingly tight chrome and black piano keys that gradually blend into the daytime LED lighting.

While not much was changed on the sides, the big size made them look more open and improved air movements.

More captivating but familiar is the interior with a mix of chrome edges and leather touches.

I loved the 10-inch infotainment touchscreen and a fully customisable 12,3-inch digital instrument panel that gives the driver a clear view of all important information with a navigation map and info on driving aids, among other features.

The C5 Aircross has two models – Feel and top-spec Shine. But we only drove the Shine around Joburg and Parys during the launch.

It adopts a new Eclipse Blue hue that changes from dark blue to black depending on the outside lighting.

The range is also available in shades already popular with customers – ice white, pearl white, black perla nera, platinum gray and steel gray.

But, I thought the front looked absolutely fantastic in darker colours, especially the black one.

Stellantis’ Brian Smith said they sought best materials for their seats, which is why the C5 Aircross is equipped with the new generation of Citroen advanced comfort seats.

Not seen in the segment, the car has three individual, sliding, reclining and retractable rear seats, and a big boot of 720L.

It is also quite comfortable and roomy for all passengers including in the rear, thanks to the 4500mm length and 1840mm width that really makes the difference.

The C5 Aircross drives well and smooth on the gravel, thanks to the air suspension that got even France President Emmanuel Macron raving and choosing this car any day.

This vehicle is sold with a comprehensive maintenance plan now standard on the C5 Aircross which covers all service and maintenance items.

With the C5 Aircross, you get a five-year/100 000km maintenance plan along with a five-year/100 000km warranty and roadside assistance.
