THE price of petrol has hit motorists across the globe and for Mzansi, it seems that the price is likely to increase again in a couple of days.
Automobile Association (AA) has warned that the looming fuel price hike could go up to R2 for a litre of 95 octane petrol.
This has led to many motorists trying out different methods of getting a bang for every buck they pay for petrol, including buying ‘fuel tabs’ and adding them to their petrol tank.
Several videos of tweeps popping these pills into their tanks have gone viral on social media, with claims that these pills increase fuel efficiency.
In one of their videos, Arrive Alive warned motorists about adding things to their petrol.
“We warn motorists of using all types of misfuelling ... when in doubt, do not use them. Listen to the vehicle experts and be cautious of fake news and gimmicks.”
Arrive Alive editor, Johan Jonck, said people should be very cautious of misinformation when looking for ways to save petrol.
“There will be a lot of fake news doing the rounds. We do understand the enormous pressure on the public with the fuel prices.
“This is not the first time we’ve seen this. We need to caution the public against using any of these substances,” Jonck said, speaking to The Citizen.
MasterDrive has compiled a list of tips, using technology, to help change driver behaviour.
1. Plan your routes
Plenty of petrol is wasted by not making your route as efficient as possible.
2. Idling
Avoid idling for longer than 30 seconds.
3. Slow down
By decreasing your speed by just 20km/h, you can improve your fuel consumption by up to 20%.
4. Tyre management
Regularly check tyre pressure and be aware when tyres need general maintenance. It can make a huge difference to fuel consumption.
5. Lighten the load
Remove any unnecessary items from your vehicle after a trip. Each unnecessary item increases petrol consumption by 1%.
