THE 17-year-old pupil has proven his engineering skills once again!
Obakeng Thetele from Turflaagte in Mangaung made news after he built a car which he used to drive around his kasi.
Daily Sun published the story headlined “Obakeng’s bike-car turns heads” on 3 July. Now the grade 11 pupil has started with another car, a bakkie this time around.

Obakeng, who wishes to study mechanical engineering, was spotted driving his bakkie around while testing it.
His proud father Leepile Thetele (50) said he will not be surprised if his son can one day build a plane.
The first car he built had three wheels and it was an automatic. The recent bakkie has four wheels with manual transmission of three gears and a reverse.
Obakeng told Daily Sun: “This is the second car that I have built. I started with this bakkie in August and this will be different from my first car. The first car is automatic and has three wheels. This one is a bakkie and is a manual transmission with three gears forward. It has a reverse gear and there is still a lot to do to make it look nice. I’m now working on headlights and will be starting with windows. It’s going be a closed bakkie and loading anyone at the back when it’s finished. I love it but my favourite will always be my first car. I want to become a mechanical engineer when I finish with my studies.”
Leepile said he’s very proud of all his children.
“I love him and very proud of him. I will continue to support him,” said Leepile.
The smart teen said he was happy with the support he gets from his family.

His mother Golo Thetele (46) said she was happy to see law enforcement officers happy with her son’s work.
She said: “Soldiers, traffic cops and cops come here and ask to take photos with my son next to his home-made car. They are so happy about his achievement and that makes me happy.”
The SunTeam will be following up on Obakeng’s new project until it’s fully done and named.
“For now, I don’t have a name for this baby but it can still take me from point A to B,” said Obakeng.
