A MERCEDES-BENZ driver was arrested over the weekend for allegedly clocking 215km/h on the N1 south highway.

According to Gauteng Traffic Police department spokesman Sello Maremane, the man was arrested while speeding in a silver Mercedes-Benz G63.

“The driver claimed he was running away from hijackers,” Maremane said.

Maremane said six other people were arrested for driving at speeds ranging from 166km/h to more than 200km/h.

They were arrested at a number of police stations including Olievenhoutbosch, Olifantsfontein and Wierdabrug.
