A VIDEO of a man has been making the rounds on social media and Mzansi is proud of what this man has done.

Joburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) spokesman Xolani Fihla said he’s aware of a video making the rounds on social media of a taxi driver attempting to flee from the police but was swiftly apprehended by a gentleman in Sandton.

Fihla said JMPD officers were conducting a roadblock at the corner of William Nicol and Sandton drive in Sandton when they stopped the minibus taxi that was transporting passengers.

“The taxi driver stepped out of the vehicle and walked to the officer who had stopped him. The officer asked him for his driver’s licence. The driver went back to the taxi but instead of returning with his licence, he just drove off,” said Fihla.

As he drove off, a chase ensued.

“Officers managed to block and stop the vehicle not far from the roadblock,” said Fihla.

He further stated that the driver stepped out of the vehicle and ran in an attempt to flee, but he was quickly caught by a gentleman who jumped out of a white Mercedes-Benz and was soon apprehended by the officers.

“It was later found out that the gentleman who caught the taxi driver is actually an SAPS member. The department salutes him for not neglecting his call of duty,” said Fihla.

The driver was taken back to the roadblock.

Fihla said the driver was issued a citation for driving without a licence, a discontinue notice was also issued for the unroadworthy vehicle and it was impounded for number plates investigation as the vehicle was displaying photocopied licence discs.
