MITSUBISHI has brought in a pimped but cheaper ASX model into the Mzansi market – the ES model.
We were behind the wheel of the more affordable model for a week and weren’t disappointed.
The new entry-level model is fitted with LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, LED fog lamps and electrically adjustable foldaway mirrors, which is great for parking in narrow spaces.
The ASX ES is also pimped at the back with LED brake lights, LED tail lights, LED reverse lights and a rear spoiler with a high-mounted stop lamp.
A radio/CD player is standard, but our test model was kitted with a touch screen system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. I wonder how many people are still using CDs, though?
USB and accessory sockets are provided with Bluetooth connectivity and hands-free voice control.
Under the hood of the ES is a 2.0-litre, 16-valve four-cylinder engine and it delivers 110kW and 197Nm.
Our test model’s engine was mated with a five-speed manual transmission.
The claimed fuel consumption is 7.5L/100km, and we weren’t too far off the mark.
The ASX is loaded with safety and other features:
Seven airbags, Side-impact Protection Bars, ISOFIX Child Seat Anchors, ASTC (Active Stability and Traction Control), HSA (Hill Start Assist System), ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), EBD (Electronic Brake-force Distribution), BAS (Brake Assist System), and Rear Park Distance Control with Rear View Camera.
The ASX ES offers loads of space and the 60/40 split of the rear seats will give you even more options.
The panoramic glass sunroof fitted on our test model is optional, but it’s a bonus to stare at the stars when you’re in the passenger seat.
Being behind the wheel of the ASX was a pleasure as the ride comfort is good, and there wasn’t too much lag to complain about.
