INSTEAD of going out drinking with friends, how about booking a 4x4 experience and learn a few things your car can do and that you know nothing about?

Many people have good cars with 4x4 capabilities, but seldom do they experience those features. Why?

Most don’t think their cars can pull through rough and rugged obstacles, but they can.

SunWheels was lucky to join scribes to a 4x4 experience organised by Mahindra, together with the South African Guild for Motoring Journalists at Lirisiba Lodge in Pretoria, and the cars never cease to amaze.

  • Our instructor, using different Mahindra 4x4s, said there are a few golden rules you need to know before going off-road. These include: Knowing and understanding your car’s capabilities and limitations. This comes handy when you face obstacles.) What’s possible and what’s not and how to approach challenges.) Stick to the rules...If the speed limit is 40km/h, drive slowly as instructed and obey all the rules, including safety belts and being aware of the road. Always keep a following distance.) Know your car’s controls – where and how to choose four-wheel drive, what’s all-wheel drive, selection of diff lock, tyres, ground clearance approach and departure angle.

Derick Crouse, the off-road instructor, said you have to understand the size and shape of the patch, as well as the pressure distribution each patch needs and the ride qualities are important to know.

“Both hands should be on the steering wheel all the time and no changing of gears through obstacles,” he warned.

Derick said sometimes tyres need to be deflated and inflated for different surfaces, to get more traction.

“Speed versus torque, for a car to move forward we need more grip or torque, not speed. Especially in the sand.”
