This year has again proven that Mzansi has many challenges, especially for youth.
This year has again proven that Mzansi has many challenges, especially for youth.

AS the 2023-year cycle is nearing its end, more and more people are already brainstorming their plans to tackle 2024.

This year has again proven that Mzansi has many challenges, especially for youth.

High crime stats continue to be a shocker, but what is concerning is the high rate of unemployment among young people in Mzansi.

Many government programmes have done little to counter that, and the same can be said for the private sector.

More and more graduates are stuck in their homes with no career opportunities available.

2023 has taken its toll on the youth, so what’s next?

According to an article by Aditi Lachman, the head of youth programmes at Youth Employment Service (YES), South Africa’s latest unemployment numbers paint a gloomy picture for the country’s youth and navigating the job market may present its challenges.

But the article continues to give the youth hope and confidence in developing skills in "future-proof" sectors, as growing numbers of youth are finding jobs and opportunities, that’s according to (YES).

This means that the youth must now change the way, the approach, and the culture of job seeking and empower themselves to be more marketable and appealing.

One could ask, what is new here that hasn’t been done before? Well, YES shares a few tips that can surely secure one a job or rather a livelihood.

According to YES’s research, in their category, “What employers want: Getting young people working," it shows employers place the highest value on relevant work experience, education/skills and a good interview. The research further stipulates that jobs of the future are in areas such as information technology, solar panel installation, tourism, creative/arts, drones and even baristas.

According to the article, work experience can replace formal qualifications.

Again, people need to network more and seek growth opportunities. Moreover, one must get a side hustle or start a business to ease the pressure of seeking employment and maintaining good mental fitness is also key on this journey.

Of course, 2024 will have its challenges and solutions. It may be a year to blossom and for others to fade.

A Happy Christmas and a much prosperous New Year to Sun Landers.

Please note that the Stevovo Column will be back on 11 January 2024.
