AL Ahly coach Pitso “Jingles” Mosimane has been forced to eat humble pie by referee Victor Gomes who continues to grow into one of the best in the world.
Mosimane has admitted that he used to be one of Gomes’ biggest critics during his time with Mamelodi Sundowns, but the no nonsense referee has since won him over as a fan.
Mosimane now has nothing but praise for his compatriot, describing him as the best referee on the African continent and one of the best in the world.
Gomes has become one of Caf’s most trusted referees having officiated the final of the African Nations Cup (Afcon) between Senegal and Egypt earlier this year.
And it was no surprise when the South African along with countryman, linesman Zakhele Siwela, were selected to officiate at the Fifa World Cup in Qatar later this year.
The Mzansi duo is part of 36 referees, 69 assistant referees and 24 video assistant match officials named by the Fifa referees committee a few days ago.
Gomes is also set to officiate the Caf Champions League final between Mosimane’s Red Devils and Wydad Casablanca set to take place at the the Mohammed V Stadium in Morocco on Monday.
And since Wydad will have the advantage of playing the final at home, Mosimane is pleased that Gomes, a no nonsense and top referee, will be in charge.
“How I used to criticise Victor Gomes, I ate my humble pie long time back and I am his biggest fan and he knows that,” said Mosimane on social media.
“I give him the respect that he deserves and he is currently the number one referee in the continent.
“Just finished watching the Wydad vs A Petro Luyanda. The manner at which he managed the game, players, and the dugouts. Just like he managed Senegal vs Egypt.
“Can we give him the honour of Ikhamanga? Please include Zakhele Siwela.”
Ahly will be eyeing their third consecutive title while Wydad will be aiming to collect their first Champions League trophy since 2017.
