GLADAFRICA Championship side JDR Stars goalkeeper, Bongani Manavhela, is hoping his sterling performance in the DStv Ekasi Champs of Champs Tournament will attract Premier Soccer League teams to offer him a contract.

The 29-year-old’s contract with JDR expired yesterday.

Last season, the former Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM) and Polokwane City goalie struggled to get game time at the Tshwane-based outfit.

Head coach and club owner Nditsheni Nemasisi preferred the Ivory Coast international Ali Sangare, instead.

In 30 league matches last season, 36-year-old Sangare played in 25 while Benin-born Marcel Dandjinou featured five times.

Manavhela, on the other hand, was the third choice goalkeeper and did not play a single league game.

After his fine form in the Champs of Champs competition, the Venda-born goalie is keeping his phone on, praying for a club that will call with an offer.

“I am happy with my performance so far in this tournament, but my goal is to win it on Sunday,” said Manavhela, who is also a gospel singer.

“I heard from my manager that teams from the Premiership and the Championship have been asking about me after they saw me in the tournament.

“I am hoping something concrete comes up and I sign with a PSL team.

“All I want is a team that will offer me a chance to play football again next season. I will also be meeting with the JDR chairman after this tournament to talk about my future.”

Soweto hosted the tournament since it started on the 16 June and DStv is televises the showpiece.

Manavhela’s Chego 17FC are set to meet Chipolopolo in the final at Dobsonville Stadium on Sunday (3pm).

The winner will take home R250 000.
