AMAZULU are on a clear upwards trajectory!
Whether or not they can continue their consistent league form and achieve their lofty ambition will depend on the result such as their 1-0 victory over SuperSport United at Kings Park Stadium last night.
A first-half goal from Siphelele Mthembu ensured Usuthu move to sixth spot with 28 points, this as Matsatsantsa dropped to third.
The Usuthu revolution under Benni McCarthy has been quite admirable, with the team registering their fourth league win in six matches.
“I’m proud of the boys. We could have scored more with the chances we created,” said McCarthy.
Indeed, the home side missed numerous chances to wrap up the game before the nervy moments towards the end, Talent Chawapiwa missing and Lehlohonolo Majoro missing glorious opportunities.
“We should have been given a penalty. It was clear to see. But we move on,” said Kaitano Tembo.
“There is hardly time to train in between matches. We play again on Friday.”
While United are battling for consistency, Usuthu have found composure and balance under McCarthy, seen as Mthembu finished off a brilliant Augustine Mulenga move as he tapped in the opener for the home side after 25 minutes.
How he didn’t score the second from a similar situation, only Mthembu can explain.
But so far it looks good for Usuthu. A top-three finish may not just be a pipe dream.
- In the other result, TS Galaxy shocked Swallows FC when they came from behind to beat the high-flying Birds 2-1 with Bevan Fransman’s 87th minute strike.
- Elsewhere, Maritzburg United beat Black Leopards 1-0 at the Harry Gwala Stadium, also yesterday.
