JUST days after the Confederation of Africa Football (Caf) confirmed that the Champions League final will take place in Morocco at Complexe Mohamed V Stadium on 30 May, Caf has also announced the Confed Cup final venue.
The Confed Cup final will take place in Nigeria at Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo 20 May 2022.
Caf said in the statement that they will confirm the kick-off time in due course.
According to Caf, this is the first intercontinental major cup final to be hosted in Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
Uyo is the capital of Akwa Ibom State – the home of Nigeria’s Premier League side Akwa United.
Last year (2021), the Confederation Cup was hosted in Cotonou, Benin where Morocco’s Raja Club Athletic beat Algerian side JS Kabylie 2-1.
Orlando Pirates put themselves one foot in the door to reach the Confed Cup final, after beating Libyan side Al Ahli Tripoli 2-0 on Sunday in the first leg. The second leg will take place at Orlando Stadium on Sunday.
In the other semi finals match, DR Congo giants TP Mazembe won 1-0, scoring a late goal to secure a victory over RS Berkane of Morocco in Congo over the weekend.
This venue holds good dust for South Africa. It is where Bafana drew against Nigeria 2-2 in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations last qualifying match under Shakes Mashaba, with Tokelo Rantie netting twice, thus eliminating the Super Eagles in the qualifiers, having won the Afcon trophy in 2013 in Mzansi.
