BRAIDED, relaxed and weaved hairdos are common sights on the streets of South Africa, showcasing a vibrant culture of beauty and self-confidence.

However, alongside these striking hairstyles, we often witness the less glamorous side of hair care: bald patches and receding hairlines. Just Skin Deep decided to delve into the root causes of this phenomenon and reached out to Professor Ncoza Dlova, a specialist dermatologist and dean of Clinical Medicine at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.  

Tight hairstyles, for instance, can lead to a condition known as traction alopecia, where the hair follicles are damaged due to constant pulling and tension.
