JACOB Zuma received a warm welcome when he visited Cape Town on the afternoon of Saturday 19 November.
Hundreds of ANC supporters gathered at the Salvation Church at Philippi Plaza for an event titled “Radical Economic Transformation in Our Lifetime” organised by the ward 35 ANC Youth League.
As he often does, Zuma opened with a song.
The former president said radical economic transformation was a policy adopted by the ANC but it had become associated with a certain faction.
“We must refuse suggestions that RET is synonymous with looting, corruption or self-enrichment of a few,” he said.
“It is those seeking the destruction of the ANC who join enemies of the ANC, including white monopoly capital, in attacking an adopted ANC policy position.”
Zuma said ANC members needed to pay attention to gogo Aubrey Matshiqi, who warned against policy askaris.
“These policy askaris, who wear our colours and shout our slogans, are there to defend the interests of big business at the expense of the impoverished masses of our land,” he said.
Addressing the crowd, Youth League member Linda Baleni said Zuma should return to lead the party.
“It’s going down before our eyes,” she said.
ANC leaders have recently been campaigning ahead of the party’s elective conference in December.
