FOLLOWING the catastrophic flooding in KZN, King Misuzulu has postponed his coronation to give his people time to heal.
King Misuzulu was set to be coronated on 28 May. President Cyril Ramaphosa was due to attend the coronation to give King Misuzulu his kingship certificate in person.
Zulu Nation and Monarch Traditional Prime Minister Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi said as the nation mourned the loss of hundreds of people to the flooding, the focus should be on rebuilding.
“In this time of tremendous pain and grief, King Misuzulu has expressed his strong conviction that the celebration of his coronation should be postponed,” he said.
“At his request, I conveyed this to Ramaphosa on Wednesday. That evening before he had even had sight of my letter, the president called to express the very same sentiment.”
Buthelezi said the president confirmed his agreement with the decision to hold the coronation after May.
“After consulting with his majesty, the royal family and president, a date for the coronation will be announced accordingly,” he said.
“On behalf of his majesty, we express our deepest sympathy with every family that has suffered loss.
“The royal family itself is in mourning at the loss of Princess Bonakele Jileka and her children, Yenzokuhle and Elimiyo, as well as the children of Princess Sindisiwe Jileka, Akhile and Zekhethelo. Princess Lindiwe ka Johnson kaTshelendoda ka Dinuzulu lost all five members of her family when their house collapsed,” said Buthelezi.
